SEDATION DENTISTRY

3 types: Nitrous Oxide, Oral Sedation and IV Sedation

Say Goodbye to Dental Anxiety with Sedation Dentistry in Grande Prairie

We treat our patients using sedation dentistry so that they are relaxed and have no anxiety during their dental care procedures. Patients are awake during the procedure. Our dentists at Plaza Dental Clinic use this method for a variety of oral care treatments including teeth cleaning, restorative work and specialized treatments in Grand Prairie.

Sedation dentistry is ideal for patients who:

Experience nervousness or anxiety when visiting the dentist
Struggle to become (and stay) numb from anesthetics
Have a low pain threshold

As per the specific medical circumstances of a patient, we offer different sedation dentistry options. Nitrous oxide sedation is used to calm a patient who suffers from anxiety during general dental treatments. It also relaxes patients undergoing a root canal or dental implants. On the other hand, IV sedation is used when oral sedation is not adequate to relieve anxiety.

Who Can Benefit from Sedation Dentistry?

If you are someone who has been putting off their dental visit due to anxiety or nervousness, we have the right solution for you. Sedation dentistry is designed to treat patients who cannot get themselves to sit in the dental chair. It can help you if you have a fear of needles and shots or have TMJ-related difficulties where it can be challenging to open your mouth for long periods and get oral treatment conveniently. Whether you suffer from an overactive gag reflex, have sensitive teeth or need to undergo a complex dental procedure in a limited time period, sedation dentistry can take you through it all. It is a technique devised to help you get the treatment you need without any worries. To help you relax in the chair, your dentist will give you a dose of anesthesia to numb the area of concern and go about the treatment. And, you wouldn’t feel a thing. Isn’t that great? Visit us to discuss your options.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

It is commonly known as “laughing gas." This form of sedation helps you relax with the use of Nitrous oxide, which is administered through a small and comfortable mask placed over your nose. You can go back to work or enjoy your day right away as it wears off quickly. The procedure is safe for adults and kids of all ages.

Nitrous Oxide Facts

Key things to remember

It is common for children to have nitrous for dental procedures
Patients recover immediately after the gas is turned off
The most common side effect is nausea/vomiting
Nitrous oxide is one of the safest sedation options

What to expect

Nitrous oxide is commonly called “laughing gas”
The patient will breathe a controlled combination of nitrous oxide and oxygen through a small nose piece that does not cover their mouth
The patient will still be aware of what is happening around them but will feel more relaxed
The patient will not be asleep
Dental treatment will be performed in the usual manner; local anesthesia may also be used and can be given when the patient is sedated
At the end of the procedure, the effects will wear off immediately

Before the appointment

You or your child should have a light meal 2 hours before the appointment to minimize the chances of nausea

Why Oral Sedation

It can help you reduce the fear and anxiety associated with the dental procedure to make the whole experience a comfortable and relaxing one.

IV Sedation

Plaza Dental Clinic is proud to be trained and licensed to offer IV sedation to our patients. A sedative helps to reduce your level of consciousness during treatment. It is delivered straight into your bloodstream to easily control your level of sedation throughout the treatment and make adjustments as required.

Most of our patients feel completely relaxed during treatment with IV Sedation. They don’t even remember anything afterwards.
